Area Governor Opportunities

We have begun the process of appointing Area Governors for 2010-2011. The Area Governor role gives you the opportunity to expand your Toastmasters horizons by working with 4-6 clubs to help them achieve their DCP goals. If you enjoy serving your fellow members as a club officer, multiply that feeling by 5, and you have a sense of the fulfillment you can achieve by serving the district beyond the 4 walls of your home club!

Ideally, Area Governors are experienced Toastmasters who have served at least 6 months as a Club President or Vice President, Education.

All Area Governors must attend the District Executive Committee Meeting, tentatively scheduled for the third Saturday of every month (though the date might vary due to holidays, etc.).

Area Governor appointments are made by incoming District Governor Dennis Dawson. If you are interested in learning more about becoming an Area Governor, please read the Area Governor Job Description, then contact Dennis Dawson to discuss the role for the 2010-2011 fiscal year.

Toastmasters Leadership Institute Handouts and Slides

Here are some handouts and slides from TLI.

District Treasurer's Reports

District Treasurer Charles Schuman has done a remarkable job this year, getting our books in order and closing out longstanding liabilities. Charles requested a midyear audit that provided excellent insight into ways we can continue to improve our fiscal oversight this year. Follow these links for more information on our district finances:

District 57 Voucher for Reimbursement Form

To be reimbursed for approved expenses related to District 57 business, please complete the Voucher for Reimbursement. (PDF, 17K) Instructions are provided with the form. Note that all expenses must be pre-approved by District Governor Dennis Dawson (dg@d57toastmasters.org).

Club Budget Template

All clubs should have a budget in place by August 31, 2010. Estimate the amount of money that you will spend this year on ribbons, pins, and other necessary items. Put the esitmate down in writing, and share the budget with the club. Collect only enough dues above the standard Toastmasters dues to cover expenses this year, and plan on spending all monies collected in this fiscal year, so that your members benefit from the dues they pay this year.

Many clubs collect more dues than necessary, and have the funds sitting around in a checking account, not even gaining interest. That does no one any good! Dues are to be spent on members, to provide educational materials and recognize their achievements. IF a club folds without spending their dues, the funds are given to the district. Club funds in club accounts are the property of Toastmasters International. Rather than sit on the money and eventually turn it in, why not spend it on Better Speaker, Successful Club, and Leadership Excellence modules? Purchase New Member kits and have them on hand to give members as soon as they sign up (then collect their kits when they arrive in the mail). Use your club funds, spend them wisely, and do not collect or keep more than is needed as a buffer for the following year.

Competent Leader Matrices

As mentioned at TLI, there are some errors on the matrix in the Competent Leadership manual on page 76. As an alternative, consider making copies of one of these revised forms for use in your club. These are more accurate and easier to use than the matrix in the manual.

Send Us Your Photos!

We have precious little content for our District Scrapbook. Please send us your JPG photos, with captions (tell us who is in the picture, when the picture was taken, and the occasion) and we will start building a 2010-2011 scrapbook.

We are looking for pictures of interest to the district as a whole, rather than pictures of club events. Division and Area Contests, Conferences, Toastmasters Leadership Institute, special guest speakers, events at specialty clubs, etc., are most appropriate for the District web site.

Photos can be sent to webmaster@d57toastmasters.org.

Take part in District 57's Triple Crown Promotion! Earn three or more educational achievements between July 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011 to be recognized as a "Triple Crown Achiever."
